About Kara

Hi! I’m Kara. I am a registered dietitian, and I am passionate about food.

My love of food and cooking started young. You could always find me in the kitchen helping my mom cook, experimenting with my Easy Bake Oven, or gathering around the kitchen island with friends or family, catching up and enjoying the aromas coming from a warm oven.

While this sounds idyllic I’ve also had a few food-related curveballs in life. Most of my life I’ve had to navigate a tree nut allergy and because I like to make things harder for myself I decided to stop eating meat in middle school. I found I just really love eating plants, so I went vegan in high school and never looked back (I promise I won’t try and convert you!).

My formal education includes an AS in Baking and Pastry Arts from Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island, a certificate degree from Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Pâtisserie in Yssingeaux, France, and a BS in dietetics and dietetic internship completed through University of Connecticut.

After UCONN, I  worked as a Farm to School and School Wellness Dietitian for a school district in Georgia. While in this role, I started to see firsthand how families experience stress around feeding and mealtimes. At the same time, I also watched kids at school light up around foods like brussel sprouts. A key difference was that they were being given the opportunity to help prepare and taste them in a fun and low pressure environment. That impact translated into their family life when they would go home and ask their family to buy brussel sprouts and parents would turn around and ask me what this was all about! I saw how it could change the way children and their families ate.

Later when Annapolis Maryland became my home, I worked for Maryland SNAP-Ed with the University of Maryland Extension agency. There, I provided nutrition education to low income folks, primarily working with pre-school aged children and their families. I spent most of my time finding different ways to connect with young children over food, their feelings about food, and making food feel fun. I worked with families, teaching them how to cook and try new foods together.  I coached parents through their struggles at home with feeding their kids, providing nutritious options on a tight budget.

I’ve taken my years of training and experience and poured it into this business. I’m passionate about helping families find their footing with feeding, so that their children can become confident and self-assured eaters in our often chaotic and confusing world.

I am passionate about the work I do and strive to stay informed of the latest evidence and research.  I have completed the Master Course in both pediatric feeding and adult eating concerns through the Ellyn Satter Institute and use these approaches in my counseling practices. I can’t wait to meet you and help your family find their joy in eating!

When I’m not talking at people about nutrition, you can probably find me at home with my cats, dog and husband, spending time with friends, reading a good book, kayaking or, of course, in the kitchen <3
